Employee assistance programmes – an overview

January 04 2022 By The Healthcare Team

Although healthcare services such as Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) have historically been primarily available to large organisations, we at Reich are now able to make these solutions available to our SME clients of all sectors, industries, and scales.

Through EAPs, we provide our clients with a suite of wellbeing services specifically aimed at improving emotional and mental health, reducing unnecessary absence, and driving workplace efficiency. These goals are realised through a range of services, including:

  • Counselling delivered face-to-face, over the phone, or online
  • 24/7/365 access to a wellbeing helpline
  • Immediate critical incident support
  • Technological wellbeing products

Benefits to organisations

Organisations using EAPs can realise many operational benefits that boost productivity and facilitate a rapid return on investment. Primary among these benefits is a significant drop in absence rates, paired with improved return-to-work statistics. Employees with a mental health condition are three times more likely to have a long-term period of sickness absence (source: Thriving at Work, 2017), contributing towards the yearly absence-cost of £18 billion per year (source: FirstCare, 2017), and so it is within an organisation’s interest to effectively and proactively address these issues.

Additional services offered

Further to the services standard across the EAP market, Reich has access to a range of additional services that complement an EAP, providing specialised wellbeing support and ensuring a complete, holistic service delivery:

  • Training workshops that provide wellbeing education, tackling issues such as stress, resilience, mental health awareness, and change management
  • Support in the event of a critical or traumatic incident
  • Specialist therapeutic solutions such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
  • Mental health first aid courses, teaching individuals how to identify, understand and support a range of mental health issues
  • Workplace mediation is designed to enable companies to resolve staff disputes through intervention from a qualified and neutral third party

Current trends in the wellbeing market

Just as the conditions of our lives both at home and at work are constantly shifting, so too are the trends relevant to wellbeing. Current trends include:

  • Presenteeism: employees struggling to disengage from work due to the rising ‘always-on’ work culture, with 86% of employees citing presenteeism as a problem within their workplace (source: CIPD, 2018)
  • Leavism: employees using allocated time off (annual leave, sickness absence) to work, with 87% of employees citing an inability to switch off outside of work hours (source: CIPD, 2018)
  • Debt: financial concerns are now a primary cause of work and home life issues, with one in five of us having average debts of £34,000 when we retire (Source: JLT, 2018)

Reich Healthcare ensure that EAP’s stay current with these trends, and continue to be effective against issues emerging within the wellbeing landscape. For more information on how we can assist your company with health and wellbeing, please contact our Reich Healthcare team on:
